Holiday World Show - Analysis

The Holiday World shows in Belfast and Dublin proved to be not only informative but entertaining this year with a question and answer session from Ryanairs`s “Michael O Leary”.

Michael took to the stage in Dublin and advised everyone to book flights with the airline and not through travel agents. He was met with quite a bit of opposition from both agents and the general public. He does point out if you don’t like his rules you have a choice and can book elsewhere. He might be a bit concerned to know we spoke to many visitors at the shows who indicated this year they were looking for TWO things, value for money and consumer protection. DIY travel was not an option. Ash clouds, political unrest and extreme weather conditions extensively covered by the media have taken their toll.

We were able to reassure our visitors that we offered both value for money and peace of mind as well as helpful advice and expert knowledge if the resorts. Unlike previous years we didn’t get so many direct enquiries for specific countries. People are prepared to be flexible in order to ensure they get the best holiday available.

It was good to see tourist boards proudly promoting their countries and Spain, Croatia, Cyprus and Turkey all had a steady stream of visitors doing their research on what the countries had to offer. There were tour operators, cruise operators, and airlines displaying their wares and all reported steady business with flexible customers open to good offers.

Lets in the Sun also noticed an increase in off season enquiries for longer stays, a direct result of the extreme winter weather, lots of couples are intending to spend at least 4 weeks in sunnier climes.

We also met lots of guests who thought villas were an expensive option, when we quoted them on a per person basis they were amazed at the value this holiday offered them.

The two most popular trends for 2011/2012 are all-inclusive holidays and self-catering holidays. The Irish holidaymakers despite all the financial problems in the country will not give up their holiday. They do want to budget carefully and have identified these two types of holiday as the best way to stick to a budget.

The next show is A Place in the Sun at Earls court in London. It is a different market and will be interesting to see how perceptions have changed from the last show in Birmingham.

Lets in the Sun attended the World Travel Market at Excel and the team report the visit as very worthwhile. The focus of the exhibition was on how to survive and thrive during a world recession. Travel is still a luxury item although it does rank very highly in peoples priorities.

The hoteliers worldwide have recognised how tough it is out there and they cannot use price reductions to attract guests and the rates have been reduced considerably in the last two years. The general consensus is to explore new avenues for marketing and the big word was “Social media”. Companies are using social media such as Facebook and Twitter to attract new customers. It may seem quite a simple cost effective way of marketing but it is actually a highly specialised sector. There are companies who will look after “the brand” and advise on the best ways of using “Social Media” to attract and maintain customers. These companies were very complimentary about our brand, we are contemporary, multi-functional and “very now”.

We met with large suppliers to the travel industry and will be adding some exciting new products over the next few months. Lets in the Sun is able to connect the individual property owner to products only available to travel industry professionals. This means we can offer a more complete booking experience for our guests and means we don’t lose our customers when they go to book their travel arrangements and get enticed by their accommodation offers.

Lets in the Sun also took to opportunity to look for new horizons and by meeting tourist organisations from around the world we can identify where demand is for the coming 18 months. We have added several countries to our portfolio as a direct result of this. Lets in the Sun can now offer you Thailand, Tunisia, Montenegro, Morocco and Curacao. There are some spectacular properties around the world and we know our guests will love the new additions.

The marketing team is busily filling up their appointment books for the World Travel Market. There are over 45000 travel professionals meeting in one place and it is the only place to be to keep up with the up and coming trends. The team meet suppliers and agents from all over the world to present our portfolio. The technology stand offers the latest ideas for marketing and distribution and there are some amazing new products we are going to test drive. The main purpose of our visit is to plan the next 24 months marketing, the hoteliers are the market leaders in the overseas accommodation industry and they are fiercely competitive. It is interesting to see how they deal with a downturn, they increase their marketing and price for demand.

“It comes as no surprise that the hotel industry has had a tough year. The global recession has devastated business travel, while hotels have been forced to slash rates and run innovative marketing campaigns in order to keep leisure demand ticking over.

We follow their lead and will be increasing our marketing, forging new alliances with overseas agents and looking for new distribution outlets. We must look to the future and invest to succeed; where the hotelier goes the overseas owner must follow as you are targeting the same market.

We are especially encouraged by the increase in enquiries from overseas specialist agents from Europe and America.

Two weeks after the show in Birmingham we are still dealing with the large number of enquiries we received from the Lets in the Sun stand at the NEC.

After every new exhibition we get the team together and analyse the show, the exhibitors, the visitors and any new trends in the overseas property industry.

The show was a great success, reasonably well attended for a property show in the current financial climate. The other exhibitors were a mixed bunch. Some developers, some long standing names in the real estate market and quite a few newcomers. The visitors were predominantly lifestyle clients taking their first tentative steps in the process of buying overseas property. We identified a new trend after just a few hours at the show. Lifestyle buyers do not want to take a weekend trip and commit to buying a property on a whistle stop tour. . We had an overwhelming number of requests for 3-6 month winter season rentals. The potential purchasers we spoke to, told us they wanted to spend some time in the area and decide at their leisure what and when to buy. A trend which is an encouraging development for the resale market, so for those of you thinking about selling your property at last some good news.

Over 90% of the clients we spoke to were looking to move to sunnier climes in the not too distant future. What they did not want to do at a property show was buy property.

This try before you buy option shows how perceptions have changed and extensive coverage in the media of what can go wrong means buyers are extremely cautious. It is a very sensible option for future expats who will get to know more about their new countries and stand a much better chance of succeeding in their new lives. It also excellent news for property owners who can tap into this trend and achieve better rental returns with these long winter lets.

Next step on the marketing front for us will be the World Travel Market, in London Excel from the 8th to the 11th of November. This is the premier global marketing event for the travel industry. 10 travel insurance traps to avoid | This is Money

This is an atricle from a couple of months ago from This is Money web site, very well written and always relevant.

1. No cover for pre-existing medical conditions - Some cheaper policies provide no cover if you (or anyone who may have an affect on your travel plans) have a pre-existing medical condition which results in a claim.

2. Policies with very specific exclusions – Some insurers, in an attempt to get premiums to the absolute lowest level, use a strategy of harsh exclusions which inevitably trap people at the claims stage. For example, often claims will require a written police report even though these are often difficult to get in many countries.

3. Selling policies with low levels of cover - Budget covers often have very low limits for elements such as baggage, money and delay – indeed some do not even cover these sections.

4. Selling policies with very high excesses - The higher the policy excess the lower the premium can be. This is not always obvious with travel insurance until a medical claim is made and the customer finds most, if not all, of their claim falls within the excess. There are now policies on the market with medical excesses as high as £400.

5. Confusing exclusions – For example, an exclusion which applies to a 'set of circumstances that could be reasonably expected to give rise to a claim'. In this instance, 'reasonable' is vaguely defined and open to interpretation from the insurance company who ultimately process the claim.

6. Deductions for wear and tear on baggage claims – Household insurance typically provides 'new for old' cover. Many travel insurance policies do not, which means the claim will be reduced depending on the age of the lost, stolen or damaged item.

7. Excesses per person per section rather than per event – This means that an event such as a mugging could result in a large number of different excesses being deducted. For example: medical costs of £450 with a £75 medical excess, damage to clothing and loss of personal effects amounting to £250 with a £50 excess, loss of money equivalent to £120 with a £50 excess, resulting in total excesses for the claim of £175 rather than £75 on an 'event' basis.

8. Missed connections – If an individual is delayed getting to the airport and as a consequence misses their connection, many policies will not cover the additional costs that result, such as additional ticket costs or even an unplanned overnight stay.

9. Breaking down on the way to the airport – It is often assumed that travel insurance provides cover for additional costs if the policy holder misses their flight due to their car breaking down on the way to the airport. However, some cheaper policies will only cover the breakdown of 'public transport', and not private vehicles.

10. Close relatives – The definition of 'close' is fairly ill-defined, so while you may think that all of your relatives are 'close,' if you study the definitions you may find that many policies limit these. So your favourite uncle becoming ill just before you go on holiday may result in a declined claim for cancellation.

As the Icelandic volcano crisis continues to wreak havoc across European flight schedules the upcoming summer and autumn holiday maker traffic is in limbo. Those who are reliant on air travel to get themselves and their families to their holiday destinations over the coming months are facing an uncertain run up to the hopeful start of their vacations.

The industry is being rocked by uncertainty as people who traditionally would be parting with their hard earned cash during April & May are holding off till the very last minute before booking anything.

As always there is a silver lining to any cloud. Both Eurostar channel tunnel and the UK ferries have seen huge growth in demand due to the airspace closure as many people have forced to change their travel plans at the last minute. Not forgetting the UK & Republic of Ireland’s own Tourism industry who are naturally going to benefit from the uncertainty created.

This however is little consolation for the overseas holiday home owner, as those relying solely on their own English speaking markets, and websites with .ie & .co.uk domains fail to deliver on the most important market – Mainland Europeans. Apart from the obvious benefit that their public holidays are not generally the same as ours they have the huge advantage of not needing to catch a flight to arrive safely and timely at their holiday home.

Although English is widely spoken throughout Europe most holiday makers prefer to search the internet in their own language, and to hope that they would make the giant leap when looking for a property in Spain, for example, that the property might be owned by an Englishman is exceedingly short sighted.

Those second home owners who are suffering a spate of cancellations need to react quickly and make sure the season does not pass them by – maximum exposure is always the key to marketing and choosing to ignore the European market should be done with caution. Make sure your marketing strategy is working for you.

Travel trends & analysis 2010: Top 50 destinations for UK travellers

We reveal the top 50 most searched for destinations from UK airports for travel in 2010.

In the top spot is Malaga, moving up one place from last year. Tenerife and Alicante are second and third, meaning Spain takes the top three positions.

Orlando is a new entry into the top ten, rising 12 places since last year. Dalaman holds its position as the 5th most searched for destination for a second year in a row, whist New York also breaks into the top ten, up five positions from last year.

Palma comes in 8th, losing one spot since last year; Lanzarote is 9th, rising four places, and Geneva is 10th, dropping two places.

Overall Spain is yet again the most popular country for Brits to visit, with 11 Spanish destinations within the Top 50, five of which are in the top ten.

“These early indications show that Spain is still by far the most popular destination for British travellers. Medium and long haul locations also seem to be on the rise compared to last year, suggesting that holiday budgets may be growing after a tough financial year” said Barry Smith, Skyscanner co-founder and business director.

Brand new entries to the top 50 are Johannesburg and Cape Town, which will be welcoming the World Cup in 2010. Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong also entered the top 50.

Destinations dropping most in search volume are Edinburgh, Salzburg, Murcia, London and Fuerteventura.

3. South Africa has seen the biggest new entry rises, likely due to World Cup 2010 traffic.
4. Highest climbers are all long haul or medium haul destinations.
5. Biggest fallers are all for short haul destinations, and include two UK and two Spanish destinations.

Data is based on user searches on Skyscanner, for UK departures for travel in 2010, using data collected in Q4 of 2009.

Kiss Flights replaces Globespan routes

Kiss Flights has launched 12 new summer services from Glasgow to help fill the gap left by the collapse of Flyglobespan.

The flights will be the first to be operated by Kiss from a Scottish airport and destinations will include Spain, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Turkey.

The charter services, using Swedish carrier Viking Airlines, will begin in April with flights to Tenerife, Malaga, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Faro and Las Palmas.

Kiss will also run flights to Corfu, Crete, Kos, Rhodes, Zante, Turkey and Cyprus in the summer peak period from late June to early August.

Kiss Flights director Paul Moss said: “We are making good progress in our efforts to backfill the capacity lost by Globespan. We are determined to ensure that holidaymakers continue to have a wide choice of airlines and destinations fromGlasgow.”

As well as the Glasgow flights, Kiss will run services from Edinburgh to the Greek islands of Corfu, Crete and Rhodes during the peak summer months

Avro sees 'phenomenal' growth for Turkey - Travel Trade Gazette

Seat-only operator Avro has increased its capacity to Turkey by 100% for summer this year, offering 200,000 seats.

It is flying to the destination for the first time from Luton, Birmingham, East Midlands, Newcastle and Glasgow, and expanding its programme from Gatwick and Manchester.

Managing director Michael Vinales said the expansion could make Avro the largest seat-only operator to Turkey this year.

“This increase follows feedback from our best supporting agents and is in line with demand we’ve seen throughout 2009 which has propelled the destination to our current top spot,” he said.

Luton flights start in May for the whole summer season to Dalaman and Bodrum twice weekly on Monday and Friday.

Birmingham to Dalaman flights will operate three times weekly and Glasgow, East Midlands and Newcastle to Dalaman once weekly.

The Manchester to Dalaman programme is doubled to seven flights per week and capacity to Bodrum is increased from Gatwick and Manchester.

Flights to Antalya are increased to three days per week throughout the whole summer season.

Vinales added: “The success of our Gatwick and Manchester programme with multiple daily flights has been nothing short of phenomenal and we are confident we will be able to announce even further increases in capacity in the lead-up and during the summer season.”

Good News on Travel Numbers

Three million people will be travelling abroad over Christmas and new year, ABTA estimates

Just as many people as last year are looking to get away over the festive period despite the recession.

The busiest days before Christmas are yesterday, today (Friday) and Wednesday, December 23.

Top winter sun destinations are Tenerife, Egypt, Dubai, Turkey and the Caribbean.

More than two million people will be leaving the country through BAA airports, which include Heathrow where 1.5 million will be leaving, Stansted 400,000, Southampton 31,000 and the main Scottish airports, Glasgow 150,000, Edinburgh 105,000 and Aberdeen 45,000.

In addition 500,000 will fly from Gatwick,320,000 from Manchester, 250,000 from Luton and 70,000 from Newcastle, 136,400 from Birmingham, 70,000 from East Midlands

Over 200,000 will travel over or under the English Channel with a further 225,000 travelling away by Eurostar, despite strike threats to the high speed rail service.

Many will also be looking to take short New Year breaks to cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, Dublin and New York.

ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “Passengers booked on BA must be breathing a huge sigh of relief as they can now look forward to their long-planned for holiday. The travel industry is also relieved that the strike has been called off.”

Passenger groups hail ‘historic’ airline delay compensation ruling Consumer groups have hailed as ‘historic’ a European decision to requiring airlines to compensate travellers for long flight delays. The ruling will require airlines in the European Union to compensate victims of mass delays for which they are responsible.

Passengers who are forced to wait three hours or more will be compensated 600 euros, the same as if their flight had been cancelled, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg decided yesterday. Airlines will be required not to cancel a flight unless it fits strict criteria set down in the new law. The ruling stated: “Passengers on a flight which is cancelled at short notice have a right to compensation, even when they are re-routed by the airline on another flight, if they lose three hours or more in relation to the duration originally planned.” The judges said that a technical problem with an aircraft could not be regarded as an “extraordinary circumstance”, unless the problem stemmed from events which “by their nature or origin are not inherent in the normal exercise of the activity of the air carrier concerned and are beyond its actual control”.

The ruling came in a judgment clarifying a five-year-old EU regulation which grants flat-rate compensation for cancelled flights of between 250 euros and 600 euros (£223 to £535). The judges said that regulation did not expressly provide that passengers whose flights are delayed also have such a right. They were dealing with cases referred from German and Austrian courts in which passengers claimed compensation after facing delays. Rochelle Turner from Which? Holiday said: “This is great news for air passengers. “We hear all too often of people who are delayed for hours at the airport, often without any information about when their flight will finally leave, and are then offered no compensation. “This judgment means that consumers will now be compensated properly for long and often frustrating delays, and not just when the airline takes the decision to cancel a flight.” Global airline passenger consumer group Flyersrights.org president Kate Hanni described the decision as “an important step forward in creating a legal acknowledgment that the rights of victims, abused and ignored by the big airlines for far too long, will be given priority over the bloodless corporations that have simply taken it for granted that they engage in any behaviour, no matter how injurious it is to consumers, without fearing repercussion”. She added: “Imagine being stuffed like a sardine in a hot metal tube, without working toilets, food or water or access to medicines for over three hours, with no rights?”

Olivia worked closely with major airlines and tour operators and owned and managed a large travel group with over 17 European offices and 100 staff. She was recognised for her contribution to the industry in various countries.
